About The Position

Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety or their designee; the Public Safety Supervisor performs duties to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, faculty and visitors on the Nichols College Campus. Applies crime risk, safety hazard prevention and de escalation techniques, methods, practices, and enforces Nichols College’s policies and procedures. Public Safety Supervisors monitor the security of the buildings and surrounding areas of the campus. They may also serve as liaison between external law enforcement agencies and the campus community. This position supports the Department of Public Safety mission to deliver excellent support and services to students, staff and faculty. Through its operational excellence, it advances the initiatives of the strategic plan, by ensuring goals are established, monitored and measured to meet the plan's timelines and objectives. This position plays a significant role in creating a vibrant and inclusive campus life. The Nichols College Public Safety Department engages the community through a comprehensive program of police, emergency management, crime prevention, emergency medical, and related public safety services to promote the conditions by which Nichols College operates as intended. The Department operates under the tenants of Procedural Justice and believes in continuous active engagement with members of our community, to prevent crime and increase the quality of life for those we serve.

Requirements

  • Basic security principles and practices, including key de escalation techniques.
  • Public safety codes, policies and regulations
  • Record keeping techniques and report writing requirements
  • Basic computer programs such as email, MS Office suite, security camera software, etc. with a willingness to learn additional systems as needed.
  • Supervisory principles and practices, including key de escalation techniques.
  • Clery Act, Title IX, and the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
  • Current public safety methods and procedures
  • Current criminal codes and laws, and effective investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Safety policies, practices, procedures and requirements of the department.
  • React in an emergency and make sound, rational decisions, demonstrating good judgment

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Previous Security, Law Enforcement, or other Supervisory experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Must have CPR and First Aid certification within 6 months of hire
  • Will be required to pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Patrols and secures campus grounds and facilities by vehicle and foot.
  • Assists in the protection of life and property on campus.
  • Examines doors, windows, gates, roadways, and lighting to ensure security.
  • Investigates and submits reports concerning criminal offenses committed on the campus in a timely manner.
  • Prepares written reports as required.
  • Completes and maintains records of daily activities including a Communication Log sheet with calls for service and building checks.
  • Monitors and reports on a continual basis all conditions which may create security or safety hazards on the College property.
  • Monitors the camera system to ensure there is no criminal activity at other parts of the campus.
  • Contacts law enforcement, fire, or other public agencies as required.
  • Assists public service representatives including fire, medical, and police with directions to emergency investigations.
  • Enforces College and local laws, rules, ordinances, and regulations according to established procedures.
  • Answers incoming calls to Public Safety and dispatches information by radio to officers.
  • Provides information and directions to campus facilities, events, or other locations.
  • Monitors campus traffic and parking; issue citations for violations.
  • Provides crowd and traffic control for special events on and off campus.
  • Responds to complaints from the campus community and assists parties to resolve issues as appropriate.
  • Respond and perform access control duties including securing and/or unlocking academic buildings for faculty, staff and students
  • Respond to fire, smoke detector, and security alarms
  • Provide safety escorts
  • Fills front desk and other assignments as needed
  • Answer calls for service
  • Receive and fill out property receipts for lost and found items
  • May provide first responder support for fires and/or first aid needs.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the College's security including community safety, parking enforcement, and escort services.
  • Participates in reviewing and updating the College's policies and procedures.
  • Provides subject matter expertise to ensure they are accurate and enforceable.
  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned staff; coordinates and/or delivers employee training; researches and develops training materials.
  • Monitors and ensures staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Promotes Public Safety programs within the campus community; develops and maintains internal and external relationships with campus stakeholders, including various departments, student organizations, community groups, and local businesses.
  • Ensures all Public Safety activities are appropriately and timely documented for tracking and review.
  • Schedules appropriate personnel as required or assigned by the Director.
  • Communicates and/or meets with the public to address complaints and safety issues; monitors and ensures appropriate follow-up on public concerns.
  • Reviews all necessary administrative forms/reports related to Public Safety incidents and operations, approve reports written and submitted by officers, and assists Security Officers, as needed.
  • Ensures reports are completed accurately and timely.
  • Liaises with law enforcement staff regarding crime prevention measures.
  • Attends and participates in various meetings pertaining to Public Safety operations and services.
  • Provides the Director with a daily summary of Public Safety incidents and activities.
  • Analyze data regarding security activities to determine patterns and effectiveness of security activities.
  • Inspects and maintains physical safety concerns on campus such as fire systems, lighting, fencing, sidewalks, roadways, gates, doors, windows, and landscaping.
  • Perform the requisite duties of Public Safety Officer as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
