About The Position

The Public Safety Officer (PSO) is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, and the community, as well as protecting District property through proactive patrol of campuses and facilities. This position is classified as nonexempt and reports to the Police Lieutenant. The PSO will assist in maintaining order and compliance with campus rules, respond to disturbances, and provide security at various events.

Requirements

  • Possession of valid Texas Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, peers, school officials, teachers, students, parents, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a professional manner.
  • Ability to understand and interact professionally with students, faculty, and the general public regarding safety and security of District facilities.
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in carrying out safety and security duties.
  • Ability to remain calm in physically and mentally stressful situations.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.
  • Ability to understand and carryout oral and written directions from supervisors and District administrators.
  • Neatness of appearance and physical conditioning commensurate with the demands of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively patrols on foot, all common areas within the campus and on campus grounds to monitor activities and maintain order, safety, and security.
  • Promptly responds to disturbances, disruptions, and distractions to restore order, safety, and security.
  • Maintains order and assists campus staff to ensure compliance with campus rules.
  • Inspects corridor/hall passes to ensure that appropriate permission to be in common areas has been obtained by students during normal classroom/instructional periods.
  • Detains and questions individuals whose actions are suspicious.
  • Assists campus staff and administrators with escorts of disruptive or uncooperative students.
  • Identifies and assists visitors by giving directions and needed explanations as appropriate.
  • Responds to calls for service that arise from dispatch, self-initiated activity, or the request for assistance from students, staff, or visitors.
  • Monitors the department and campus issued portable radios and keeps dispatch informed of activity and location; remains available via landline or cellular phone during working hours.
  • Provides security, access control, and crowd/traffic control at campus drop off and dismissal, athletic events, extra-curricular events, and other events as needed.
  • Confers with sworn campus police officers on means and methods of increasing safety and security.
  • Promptly summons BISD Police, or other appropriate emergency service responders as needed.
  • Notifies students, faculty, staff, and visitors of parking violations.
  • Maintains a positive and professional working relationship with students, staff, administrators, fellow public safety officers, sworn campus police officers, and supervisors.
  • Perform any other duties assigned.
