About The Position

The Public Safety Officer at BMC South plays a vital role in maintaining a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Working both independently and as part of a team, the Officer provides high-visibility patrols, responds to emergencies and behavioral health incidents, supports clinical operations, manages access control, and delivers exceptional customer service across the campus. The Officer is responsible for identifying and mitigating safety risks, conducting preliminary investigations, documenting incidents, and assisting with hospital operations in alignment with departmental policies. This position is essential to ensuring a consistent and professional safety presence that supports the mission, values, and therapeutic environment of BMC South.

Requirements

  • Ability to pass all pre-employment screenings, including the prescribed medical/physical exam.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to show compassion, empathy, and respect to all individuals.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to read, write, and speak effectively in English, and communicate clearly during stressful or dynamic situations.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and remain composed when interacting with escalated, distressed, or behaviorally challenged individuals, while working independently or as part of a team.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to obtain/maintain a Massachusetts Firearms Identification Card (FID) or License to Carry (LTC).
  • High school diploma (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct high-visibility patrols of all BMC South buildings and grounds; identify hazards, enforce policies, and ensure a safe environment.
  • Respond immediately to emergencies, behavioral health incidents, and all calls for service, using appropriate de-escalation and intervention techniques.
  • Complete clear, objective, and timely incident reports; document actions taken and communicate effectively with supervisors and clinical partners.
  • Manage access control and visitor policies, verify identification, and restrict unauthorized individuals in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Investigate suspicious activity, safety concerns, and potential criminal incidents; protect evidence and gather initial witness and subject information.
  • When assigned, operate the Public Safety Desk/Control Center, monitor security systems, coordinate responses, and maintain chain of custody for property and equipment.
