About The Position

The Public Safety Officer acquires and applies the job skills necessary to provide a safe and secure environment for improving the health of our communities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Public interactions work experience required.
  • Driver's License in applicable state required.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Must complete Basic Security Officer Certification through the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within 6 months of hire and maintained throughout employment required.
  • Employees who are hired into a position that requires the employee to drive a vehicle on behalf of the corporation must possess a valid driver’s license, be 21 years of age or older and have a Motor Vehicle records verification.
  • Records must meet the criteria set forth in Vehicles – Company Owned/ Leased - NH-LD-RM-3.
  • Driving records will be reviewed and vetted upon hire and must align with UVA Community Health standards.
  • Satisfactorily completes all required organizational and departmental basic, field, and in-service training programs including the Corporate Public Safety Training Plan.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing.
  • Ability to accurately receive and transmit information by radio and telephone.
  • Ability to translate observations and information into legible, complete, and accurate reports.
  • No criminal record.
  • Maintains compliance with the UVA Health Northern VA Culpeper Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Immediately notifies Director of Public Safety or Public Safety Manager of any and all charges relating to the operation of a motor vehicle and/or criminal complaint.

Nice To Haves

  • Work experience in related field preferred (law enforcement, military, or security management).
  • Previous healthcare security experience preferred.
  • Security, law enforcement or military experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides a safe and secure environment at all facilities.
  • Makes security checks of facilities during non-operating hours.
  • Controls patient and visitor traffic in Emergency Department.
  • Responds to security breaches when detected or dispatched.
  • Enforces applicable federal, state, and local laws as they relate to public safety.
  • Responds to calls for service in accordance with established priorities.
  • Operates patrol vehicles safely and in accordance with Public Safety policies and procedures.
  • Controls pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Enforces parking regulations in accordance with hospital or facility policies and procedures.
  • The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
