About The Position

The Public Safety Officer position at Swedish Hospital involves providing unarmed uniformed security and safety-related services under general supervision. The role supports the department's mission to deliver high-quality service and protect persons and property from harm. Responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas, investigating unusual occurrences, responding to service calls, providing directions to patients and visitors, directing vehicle traffic, issuing parking citations, physically restraining unruly individuals when necessary, and ensuring the security of hospital premises and equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one year experience in a customer-focused service-based organization.
  • Valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification Card required within 90 days of start date.
  • Current CPR certification issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross within 90 days of start date.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge base developed through a minimum of two years of experience in law enforcement, military, or private security.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment.
  • Fundamental understanding of computers, loss prevention, and fire/security technology.
  • Attainment of certification by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) within twelve months of start date.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas of facilities and grounds on foot or in a motorized vehicle according to established schedule.
  • Investigates unusual occurrences and reports incidents of potential loss of property.
  • Responds to service calls in a timely, safe, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Welcomes customers to the hospital and provides accurate directions.
  • Directs vehicle traffic to prevent congestion and issues parking citations.
  • Physically restrains unruly patients and visitors when necessary.
  • Administers control systems to protect patient and employee valuables.
  • Checks to ensure hospital doors and windows are securely locked.
  • Investigates and documents thefts, accidents, and other incidents.
