About The Position

The Public Safety Officer II (PSO II) assigned to the Special Response Unit (SRU) provides advanced security services to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, staff, and university assets. This role requires a high level of expertise in public safety functions, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to respond to complex incidents across Johns Hopkins properties. SRU Officers respond to calls for service, support high-risk security needs, and may also work alongside detection canine handlers. As an PSO II in the SRU, you will serve as a mentor to junior officers, coordinate emergency response activities, and enforce safety protocols while delivering exceptional customer service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of security or law-enforcement experience.
  • Experience in customer service roles strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of public safety operations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer-service skills.
  • Ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Proficiency with modern security systems and basic computer applications (e.g., Outlook, ARMS).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Valid Driver's License (must be maintained; point limits apply).
  • Ability to obtain and retain a clearance ID card through a Maryland State Police background investigation.
  • Successful completion of a Maryland Police & Correctional Training Commission-certified Special Police Officer (SPO) Academy, or an accredited law enforcement training academy.
  • Required post-hire training: CPR, Stop the Bleed, Narcan, de-escalation, and ongoing certification maintenance.
  • Maryland Security Guard License required (must apply within 2 weeks and obtain within 90 days).
  • Must be at least 21 years old (exceptions may apply for applicants with military, law-enforcement, or comparable healthcare security experience).
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs and perform extended standing, walking, running, stair-climbing, and physical restraint as part of a team.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional training in criminal justice or public safety preferred.
  • Security-related professional certifications (CHPA, CHSO, etc.) are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive security patrols across campus and high-risk areas.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to complex incidents, emergencies, and alarms.
  • Support and participate in SRU deployments at any JHU/JHM facility as needed.
  • Conduct investigations, write detailed incident reports, and maintain accurate security records.
  • Oversee access control, identification verification, and enforcement of entry requirements.
  • Mentor and support junior officers; assist in staff training and professional development.
  • Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency responders.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness planning, drills, and response coordination.
  • Operate and monitor advanced security technologies (surveillance systems, alarms, access control).
  • Report equipment or system malfunctions and recommend improvements.
  • Provide excellent customer service to staff, patients, and visitors while resolving conflicts professionally.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety/security regulations.
  • Maintain readiness to restrain or apprehend individuals as part of a team when required.
