About The Position

This position will work for the Illinois OSHA Enforcement Division to ensure compliance with occupational safety and health standards and assist with Illinois OSHA’s mission to protect the health and safety of public employees through the inspection, investigation, and evaluation of public facilities. Please understand, IL OSHA enforcement inspections are detailed and require significant documentation. After the on-site inspection, an inspector will spend several hours writing a narrative and developing a case file to support recommended violations. The inspection process typically takes several days to a few weeks and is usually much more intensive than inspections conducted in other occupations.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of two years of college including courses in engineering, technology, physical or life sciences, industrial hygiene, or related fields.
  • Requires either:          A) Successful completion of the State of Illinois Public Safety Inspector Trainee program;          OR         B) One year of scientific, technical, or other work experience that demonstrates understanding of occupational safety and health principles and practices and successful completion of the applicable OSHA sanctioned training course(s) prior to expiration of probationary period of employment.        Related work experience in the areas of work safety inspection and consultation, promotion or training may be accepted as meeting the requirements of this class on a year-for-year basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of experience as an inspector with federal OSHA, Illinois OSHA, or another state OSHA plan.
  • Two (2) years of experience with a computerized inspection management system that tracks violative conditions of 29 CFR Part 1910 and Part 1926.
  • Two (2) years of experience determining severity and probability justifications for violations of 29 CFR Part 1910 and Part 1926.
  • One (1) year of providing compliance assistance to multiple employers to achieve compliance with 29 CFR Part 1910 and/ or Part 1926.
  • Two (2) years of experience presenting on occupational safety and health topics of interest to audiences that include multiple employers and industries.

Responsibilities

  • Travels to a wide variety of state, county, and municipal workplaces to conduct inspections while using personal protective equipment such as hard hats, safety shoes, safety glasses, and protective clothing.
  • Investigates incidents, accidents, and fatalities in public workplaces which require sensitive technical inspection.
  • Prepares detailed inspection reports documenting findings and detailing violations of health and safety regulations and standards.
  • Receives training to improve inspection skills and knowledge.
  • Develops a variety of training material concerning occupational safety and health standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
