About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations. Work involves receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, monitoring alarms and CCTV systems, obtaining and relaying information, and dispatching appropriate personnel. Position is responsible for maintaining communication logs and databases and operating a host of complex telecommunications and computer equipment to include multi-line phone systems, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system,, and two-way radios. These positions require the ability to multi-task and to remain calm and composed in high stress situations. Positions maintain confidentiality and discretion, works individually or with others and adapts to change and circumstances. The employee in this position is considered an essential employee and may be required to work non-traditional hours (evenings/overnight), weekends, holiday, during severe weather events, and overtime hours. As a condition of continued employment, the Public Safety Dispatcher must be able to successfully complete and maintain the APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification within the first six (6) months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Dispatcher. The Public Safety Dispatcher must be able to successfully complete the Public Safety Dispatch Academy when scheduled to attend, usually within the first six months of their initial hire date as a Public Safety Dispatcher. ________________________________________ This position allows eligible veterans and their spouses to claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Requirements

• High school Diploma or equivalent required.
• Three or more years of documented customer service, administrative, police dispatch or call center experience.
• Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
• Excellent written and oral communications
• Ability to remain calm and objective, independently analyze situations and quickly identify appropriate actions
• Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in stressful situations
• Ability to maintain confidential information exposed to during the commission of duties.
• Ability to discern between emergency and non-emergency situations, circumstances, requests, and calls for service, by using trained methods of evaluation, classification, and prioritization to ensure the customer’s request has been accurately described and, documented in the interest of initiating and applying appropriate levels of response, in accordance with established protocol
• Ability to multitask, coordinate simultaneous mental, manual and visual activities in a fast-paced environment using multiple pieces of technology and software applications
• Ability to work with a diverse population including students, faculty and staff and the general public in a manner that is welcoming and professional.
• Willing to work any shift, any day (to include weekends, holidays, and during severe weather events), and to respond when contacted after hours to assist with shift coverage to ensure minimum staffing levels.
• Knowledge of security and safety measures applicable to college operations
• Knowledge of college organization, telephone procedures, office practices and procedures
• Proficient in computer skills with the ability to enter and verify information with accuracy
• Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

Nice To Haves

• Experience monitoring alarm and camera systems and using computerized dispatch and records systems preferred.
• Current CPR with AED certification preferred.
• IS-100, IS-700, IS-800.d, IS-907 certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Determines the nature and importance of all telephone call requests, and initiates appropriate personnel.
• Inputs and retrieves information from different Public Safety databases, monitors all internal office telephones, two-way radio communications, alarm and access control systems, and maintains a detailed dispatch CAD system.
• Maintains the data of the Public Safety computerized dispatch and records systems.
• Effectively communicates with students, faculty, employees, emergency personnel, etc. When gathering information related to an incident, the Public Safety Dispatcher is required to ask probing questions to obtain relevant information to include: who, what, when, where, and why.
• Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
• Monitors CCTV videos.
• Performs related functions as assigned.
• Prioritizes calls for service, assigns appropriate number and type of public safety operations personnel, and notifies supervision on critical, active, and pending incidents.
• Participate in both in-house and external training to develop specialized knowledge for the purpose of acquiring progressively responsible communications call taking and/or dispatch skills.
