About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher I position at the City of Lubbock involves operating emergency communications equipment to receive and dispatch police emergency calls. This role is critical in ensuring effective communication between the public and police officers, requiring multitasking skills and the ability to work in a high-pressure environment. The dispatcher will work in a 24/7 operation, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays, and will be responsible for maintaining accurate records and data in accordance with department procedures.

Requirements

• Bilingual skills are required.
• Ability to type 45 words per minute with 85% accuracy.
• Must pass a multi-tasking skills test administered by Communications.
• Must successfully pass audiogram, drug screen, psychological evaluation, and background investigation including credit history.
• Knowledge of emergency communications procedures and related systems.

Nice To Haves

• Related emergency situation experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Operate sophisticated phone systems to receive emergency or non-emergency calls and obtain necessary information from callers.
• Enter information into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.
• Operate radio console to dispatch police officers based on the nature of the call and availability of units.
• Maintain radio contact with police officers and dispatch additional officers or appropriate assistance as required.
• Obtain and relay essential information to police officers.
• Attain advanced geographical knowledge of the City to determine proper routing of incidents based on location.
• Maintain records and data in accordance with department procedures.
• Become proficient in police computer systems, including TLETS and TCIC, and related databases.
• Route, transmit, and interpret messages sent/received through these systems.
• Participate and attend job-related meetings and training.
