About The Position

The City of Long Beach is accepting online applications for the position of Public Safety Dispatcher I - IV. This role involves receiving and dispatching emergency (911) and non-emergency calls for police, fire, and emergency medical services. The dispatcher will enter data into a computer terminal while questioning callers for information, determine the nature and validity of calls, and may provide post-dispatch medical instructions. The position requires the operation of various communications equipment and performing call reception and dispatch activities using a computer-aided dispatch system. Additional responsibilities include answering inquiries, relaying information to field units, and potentially training new dispatchers. This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary range of $2,071.20 - $3,528.40 biweekly.

Requirements

  • Possession of a California P.O.S.T. Dispatcher certificate or a recognized Emergency Medical Dispatcher certificate.
  • Two years of paid, full-time equivalent experience as a public safety dispatcher with a public agency within the last 12 months.
  • Ability to demonstrate keyboarding skills at 35 wpm with proof of acceptable keyboarding certification.
  • Willingness to work any shift assignment, including mandatory holidays, weekends, and overtime.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of emergency and non-emergency calls with tact and good judgment.
  • Ability to speak English clearly and understandably and comprehend written and orally presented information.
  • Ability to pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Answer or refer inquiries and complaints regarding public safety matters.
  • Access, retrieve, and transmit vehicular or incident information to field units.
  • Relay relevant situational information to non-city enforcement or public safety agencies.
  • Provide training for dispatchers and participate in evaluation of their performance.
  • Act in various dispatch supervisory positions as required.
