About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher I position involves operating sophisticated communication systems to manage emergency and law enforcement communications. The role is critical in coordinating responses to emergencies, disseminating information, and supporting law enforcement and emergency personnel during various incidents. Dispatchers must work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays, and are responsible for maintaining accurate records of communications and responding to public inquiries.

Requirements

  • At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in operating communications systems or in fast-paced environments requiring multi-tasking.
  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Successful completion of a critical skills assessment prior to hire.
  • Possession of a current and valid motor vehicle driver's license may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a Communications Training Officer or other related certifications obtained through on-the-job training.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, review, and transmit emergency and law enforcement communications using various communication systems.
  • Answer complaints and transmit broadcast orders to coordinate the dispatching of law enforcement and emergency personnel.
  • Coordinate communications activities during public emergencies in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Provide assistance to the public via emergency communication devices, including 911 systems.
  • Coordinate activities of law enforcement personnel during major actions such as high-speed chases and surveillance.
  • Coordinate activities of emergency personnel during major emergencies like natural disasters and medical emergencies.
  • Utilize federal, state, and municipal communication systems to evaluate and forward information to relevant agencies.
  • Respond to requests for information from worldwide law enforcement agencies regarding missing persons and criminal histories.
  • Coordinate the emergency transport of human blood and organs to medical facilities as required.
  • Maintain records of radio transmissions and teleprocessing systems, and provide information to the public regarding weather and travel conditions.
