About The Position

The Public Safety Dispatcher 1 is an entry-level position responsible for receiving, evaluating, and processing emergency and non-emergency calls for law enforcement, fire, and EMS departments. The dispatcher interacts with the public and various agencies, dispatches units, and maintains records. This role operates within a 24-hour center, requiring flexibility in scheduling and the ability to handle high-stress situations effectively.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• One year of progressively responsible office experience involving computers, data entry, and customer service work.
• Work experience in a public safety-related field is highly desirable.
• Bilingual skills and experience in a fast-paced, high-stress environment are preferred.
• Ability to pass a background investigation for NCIC, NCJIS, and related computers.
• Typing test of at least 35 wpm.

Responsibilities

• Responds to radio calls from law enforcement and emergency personnel in the field.
• Performs record searches from local databases and national systems for warrant and criminal history status.
• Confirms active warrants and transportation requirements for law enforcement agencies.
• Receives 911 calls for assistance from various locations.
• Dispatches emergency units and relays pertinent information to field officers.
• Provides emergency medical instruction using approved protocols.
• Communicates effectively with distressed callers and maintains composure in emergencies.
• Maintains a written log of Temporary Protective Orders served.
• Operates audio logging equipment for all radio and phone calls received and transmitted.
• Maintains local databases and enters calls for service or officer-initiated activity.
• Performs daily maintenance on equipment and troubleshooting as necessary.
• Assists in training if more than three years on the job.
