About The Position

The Public Safety Communications Dispatcher position within the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) is a critical role that operates under general supervision. Dispatchers are responsible for receiving both emergency (9-1-1) and non-emergency calls from the public and public safety agencies. This role requires the dispatcher to efficiently gather, evaluate, prioritize, and document information from callers, ensuring that police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) units are dispatched promptly to respond to various situations. The dispatching process utilizes a computer-aided dispatch system, multiple video display terminals, and a two-way radio dispatch console, making it essential for dispatchers to be adept at using technology in high-pressure environments. The DEM's Division of Emergency Communications operates continuously, 24/7, which means dispatchers may be assigned to work various shifts, including day, swing, and night shifts, as well as weekends and holidays. The role demands flexibility, as dispatchers may work 8-hour or 10-hour shifts, or longer, depending on operational needs. The working conditions are fast-paced and can be highly stressful, requiring dispatchers to maintain composure and efficiency while managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Essential duties include evaluating incoming reports of emergencies, transmitting accurate information to field personnel, monitoring the status of incidents, and maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information. Dispatchers must also have a strong understanding of local geography and public safety policies to effectively coordinate responses and provide accurate information to callers. This position is vital for ensuring public safety and effective emergency response in the community.
