About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Public Safety Captain as Administrative Sgt., responsible for enforcing the laws of the State of SC. Performs the as oversight of administrative duties including supervising the Telecommunication Supervisor and operators in the TCC. Ensures that TCC is in compliance with SLED, SC CJA, SC EMD and other established regulations and procedures. Responds to emergencies by being on call 24/7. Responsible for monitoring the operation and maintenance of a secured communication network, which includes radio, NCIC and computer system. establish protocol regarding NCIC and computer operation. Serves as an Assistant Terminal Agency Coordinator (ATAC) for the agency.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
  • Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.
  • Must be knowledgeable of state, rules, and regulations for the protection and security of persons and property of all DJJ facilities.
  • Knowledge of proper law enforcement officer behavior and role; modern law enforcement techniques and procedures; how to collect and preserve evidence, the legal rights of both suspects and law enforcement personnel; the laws one is responsible for enforcing; the ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions; the ability to deal firmly, yet tactfully, with the general public; to effectively interview witnesses and suspects; to read and comprehend written materials; and to write clearly and effectively.
  • The candidate should possess high morals, and character, someone stable and natural, and be able to withstand a background investigation.
  • Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent youth daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures.
  • Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., sit 1-3 hours per day: stand 1-3 hours per day, walk 1-3 hours per day, and ability to work varied hours to meet organizational needs.
  • Deal with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple competing priorities during high-stress situations and ability to occasionally travel overnight.
  • This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youths within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The employee may have direct and direct contact with youths within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Nice To Haves

  • A high school diploma and 3 years of experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
  • SCCJA Certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and assists in the development and oversight of training TCC program, policies and procedures to cover equipment and dispatch procedures.
  • Plans, schedules, and reviews work submitted by TCO Supervisor in conjunction with the TCOs.
  • Conducts EPMS appraisal, interviews, administers corrective discipline for subordinates as needed.
  • Approves disciplinary actions recommended by the TCO Supervisor.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation to support disciplinary actions and recommends disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Oversees the planning, schedules and reviews work of subordinate staff, counsels with employees as appropriate.
  • Supervises the installation, testing, maintenance and repair of all communication equipment.
  • Serves as an Assistant Terminal Agency Coordinator (ATAC) for the agency.
  • Serves as the TCO Supervisor in the absence of the TCO Supervisor including but not limited to providing shift coverage.
  • Conducts patrols of all areas within DJJ Institutional grounds on a non-scheduled basis.
  • Responds to emergency calls for service/assistance, serves, instructs, corrects, investigates and reports persons or incidents or violations contrary to the best interest of institution.
  • Prepares written reports of investigation based on his or her actions.
  • Escorts unauthorized, unruly visitors, or terminated employee(s) off DJJ Campuses. Investigates motor vehicle collisions on DJJ property.
  • Investigates and assists in all escapes from institutions in the apprehension of juvenile(s).
  • Performs other duties deemed necessary by the supervisor, Director of Public Safety and/or the Inspector General.
