About The Position

Communicates the system mission and vision to the public and supports all clinical and institutional activities through an ongoing media relations and communications program, including the development and dissemination of news, feature and photo releases, proactive and reactive media contacts, and crisis communications. Proactively supports the efforts that will ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

Requirements

  • 5 years experience in public relations or communications
  • Experience in media relations
  • Experience in a supervisory or senior account role
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills, including a thorough understanding of correct grammar and ability to write news releases, feature stories, pitch letters, statements, and talking points.
  • Ability to create targeted messages for a variety of media outlets
  • Must be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable to unexpected changes
  • Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and presentation skills
  • Demonstrates ability to present in front of system leadership
  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, English, Communications, or related field

Responsibilities

  • Provides counsel to Manager, Public Relations, Director, External Communications and Vice President, Marketing & Communications in the event of crisis situations.
  • Provides strategic public relations input for business partners for centers, service lines, marketing, Foundation, and system.
  • Provides counsel, mentoring, and guidance to public relations team and interns through physical presence and engagement.
  • Serves as lead member of Code Green initial response team in absence of Manager, Public Relations.
  • Serves as media relations staff on-call to respond to media inquiries during the day, after hours, on weekends, and on holidays, in accordance with the system’s 24x7 media relations policy.
  • Monitor local and national news to make team leaders aware of breaking news related to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the healthcare industry and provide executive summaries detailing how these changes will impact the organization.
  • Leads development of communications materials for campaigns, initiatives, special programs and plans for team members and departments, measures KPIs and reports out on campaign results.
  • Responds to media inquiries in accordance with media relations procedures and represents the system in a professional manner.
  • Leads oversight and guides production of monthly reports and summaries of placements, metrics, accomplishments, and other initiatives to inform Manager, Public Relations and key leadership.
  • Researches, writes, and disseminates news releases, feature stories, photo releases, calendar announcements, and story pitches to appropriate news media outlets in accordance with media relations procedures and policies and within deadlines.
  • Partners with social media and video content team to identify patient family stories, coordinate and facilitate interviews and long form videos.
  • Develops messaging and talking points, and maintains an acute awareness of the interests, needs, and sensitivities among the system’s various audiences, including parents, families, employees, volunteers, physicians, donors, trustees, and the general public.
  • Makes appropriate arrangements for interviews with hospital personnel and volunteers and escorts media representatives on system property.
  • Develops and enhances relationships with appropriate local, national and trade media representatives.
  • Maintains skill levels in technology tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and media monitoring services required to perform job requirements.
