About The Position

Overview The Public Programs Event Leads at The New York Public Library (NYPL) serve a critical role in the department on event days. They serve as the point person between the team’s Producers with the rest of Event Staff, responsible for supporting production staff in ensuring all aspects of the event set up and execution are completed in a timely and thorough manner. Event Leads offer the highest level of customer service possible to all patrons and talent, creating a welcoming environment for all. Event Leads also help manage the routine setup and breakdown of events. Event Leads are hourly employees, and are only scheduled to work on days when there are events. Shifts are in the afternoon to evening and are typically four to six hours long. Event Leads are assigned to shifts on a first come, first served basis. Event Leads may not always be scheduled as Lead for every event they work and may also work under other Event Leads. All Event Leads are required to to be available to work as Lead for at least 20 events per season, and to put special emphasis on being available for The Library After Hours series.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required
  • Previous experience in customer service
  • Interest in or knowledge of literature, arts and culture
  • Friendly, inquisitive and driven to help create a consistently high quality event experience
  • Display excellent customer service skills and the ability to listen and communicate effectively
  • Effectively manage a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise and firmness
  • Proven job reliability and responsibility
  • Must be computer literate
  • Ability to count money and make change accurately
  • Maintain a professional and neat and well-groomed appearance

Responsibilities

  • In coordination with Producers and Event Staff, Event Leads are responsible for ensuring that set up, check in, and post-event duties are completed in an efficient, resourceful, and timely manner
  • Check-in/Usher: line management; scan tickets; manage standby, VIPs, and reserved seating; provide patrons with programs and other relevant materials; coordinate patron accessibility needs; ensure house rules are adhered to during the event; post-event crowd management
  • Assist Producers with talent arrivals/departures, greenroom set up, and other related needs
  • Assist with book sales, book bundle pick-ups, and book signings
  • In coordination with Producers and Event Staff, manage audience Q&A; livestream monitoring; and other production related responsibilities as assigned
  • Notify supervisory staff and/or security staff of any emergency situations immediately as they occur
  • Event Leads may be required to arrive before other Event Staff to be briefed on details and logistics of the specific event and to assist with additional set up
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
