About The Position

The City of Tallahassee is seeking candidates for the position of Public Infrastructure Technician I, II, and III within the Underground Utilities & Public Infrastructure Department. This role involves manual labor and skilled work in the construction, operation, and maintenance of the City's public works infrastructure system. The position is entry-level for Technician I, requiring basic skills and knowledge, while Technicians II and III require more experience and technical skills. The work is performed under supervision, with increasing levels of responsibility and independence as one progresses through the technician levels. The City emphasizes training and certification to ensure employees can advance in their careers.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class E State driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Obtain a commercial learner's permit within three months of appointment.
  • Obtain a Class 'A' State Commercial Driver's License within nine months of appointment.
  • For Technician II, two years of experience in construction or maintenance of streets/drainage.
  • For Technician III, three years of experience in construction and maintenance of streets/drainage.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in Maintenance of Traffic, Confined Space, Excavation, Trenching and Shoring.
  • Florida Stormwater Associations Level 1 or Level 2 Operators certification.
  • Signs and Pavement Markings Technician certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manual labor in the construction, operation, and maintenance of streets and drainage infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, and asphalt pavers.
  • Exercise independent judgment in dealing with individual customers.
  • Provide direction and oversight to a small group of laborers.
  • Complete training and work assignments that become progressively more complex.
