About the position

This position is responsible for engaging and enhancing the City of Austin's workforce experience and disseminating news and information about citywide and departmental programs and initiatives with the 16,000+ city employees at a variety of work locations, ranging from an office environment to field staff. Developing and implementing internal communication campaign strategies and providing guidance to the networks of citywide communications professionals will also be a key responsibility. While internal communications will be the focus of this role, other duties may contribute to social media, marketing, media and public relations.

  • Provide guidance to the networks of citywide communications professionals.
  • Contribute to social media, marketing, media, and public relations.

Requirements

  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising or related field.
  • For Public Information Specialist Sr: Four (4) years of progressive experience in developing and implementing programs of public information, one (1) of which was in a team leader/coordinator capacity.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing multiple tasks with short deadlines under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Highly collaborative work style and ability to work well in a team environment and establish good rapport at all levels of the organization.
  • In-depth understanding of local government.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience story mining, pitching, writing, editing, and distributing a weekly employee newsletter featuring a variety of content focused on employee engagement.
  • Experience developing and executing innovative strategies and tactics to engage a large workforce in diverse locations on various topics.
  • Experience leading large internal communications campaigns and initiatives.
  • Experience drafting and updating intranet and web content.
  • Experience communicating with diverse demographics.
  • Experience translating complex ideas for a general audience.
