The main purpose of this position is to serve as the State Public Health Veterinarian for the surveillance, prevention and control of zoonotic diseases.   • Promote and provide animal rabies testing protocol to veterinary professionals.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on the epidemiology and recommendations for prevention and control of zoonotic diseases.
  • Consult and provide guidance to the OSDH Infectious Disease Prevention and Response Epidemiologists and Sanitarians on zoonotic diseases.
  • Provide veterinary medical and epidemiological consultation to healthcare professionals, laboratory personnel, veterinarians, and the general public.
  • Oversee the monitoring and management of exposed unvaccinated domestic animals to rabies.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on management of animals involved in severe bites inflicted on humans.
  • Serve as Oklahoma’s representative to the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians (NASPHV).
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of new surveillance methods and diagnostic tests related to zoonotic diseases.
  • Provide technical assistance to bioterrorism and all-hazards emergency response planning efforts.
  • Collaborate with local, state, and federal partners to formulate and interpret laws and regulations for disease intervention and control.
  • Doctorate degree of veterinary medicine (DVM).
  • Five (5) years of experience in the diagnosis and management of animal diseases.
  • Currently licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Oklahoma.
  • Experience in a public health field.
  • Master’s degree in public health (MPH) or preventive medicine.
  • Hourly rate of $46.00 based on education and experience.
  • Part-time work schedule with up to 20 hours per week.
  • Availability for PRN (as-needed) basis for urgent situations.
