Within the County organization, the Health & Human Services Public Health Division works to protect and promote the health of the community. The division focuses on preventing disease, reducing health risks, and creating conditions that support safe, healthy living for all residents. Public Health monitors community health concerns, provides education and outreach, and implements programs that address the causes and impacts of health issues. By promoting healthy environments, sharing accurate health information, and coordinating prevention efforts, the Public Health Division supports a strong and resilient community where individuals can work, live, and play safely. To continue this important work, we are seeking a candidate who will perform the responsibilities outlined in the job summary and contribute to our efforts in serving the community. Job Summary: The Public Health Nurse delivers population-based and community-oriented nursing services to protect and promote public health. This position supports program implementation, community collaboration, disease prevention, and direct client services in alignment with public health priorities. Responsibilities require clinical expertise, independent judgment, and engagement with individuals, families, and community partners.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN)/Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited institution.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CPR Certification - American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver Certification or equivalent.
  • Must complete National Incident Management System (NIMS)-700, Incident Command System (ICS)-100, and ICS-200 within one year of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of progressive experience in public health nursing.
  • Training or experience in emergency preparedness, including knowledge of ICS and NIMS frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts surveillance, assessment, and case management for communicable and chronic diseases in accordance with public health protocols and legal requirements.
  • Administers immunizations, provides health screenings, and delivers health promotion activities in diverse community settings.
  • Investigates and follows up on disease outbreaks and public health concerns, coordinating with medical providers and state agencies as needed.
  • Applies the nursing process to develop and implement plans of care that address the health needs of individuals and families, including maternal-child health, chronic disease management, health education, and prevention strategies.
  • Provides targeted services for programs such as Maternal Child Health, First Breath, Lead Screening, and, ensuring compliance with grant and regulatory guidelines.
  • Participates in emergency preparedness planning and exercises; responds to public health emergencies per incident command protocols.
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation in systems including, Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR), Healthy Homes and Lead Poisoning Surveillance System (HHLPSS), The Clinical Manager (TCM) and Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS); complies with privacy and data security standards.
  • Designs and presents public health education initiatives for community groups, schools, and partner organizations to support health literacy and prevention.
  • Collaborates with public, private, and nonprofit entities to identify and address community health needs; may lead multi-agency efforts or task forces.
  • Serves as a mentor or preceptor for new staff and nursing students, and contributes to internal training and professional development activities.
