A Public Health Nurse is a registered professional nurse who functions independently and exercises critical nursing judgment. This position ensures the provision of quality nursing care and health education in accordance with best nursing practices. The Public Health Nurse will investigate disease reports, determine community risk and provide client and community education in a fast paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Conducts surveillance and investigation of reportable diseases based on Centers for Disease Control and Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines and rules and regulations.
  • Assures appropriate treatment for infectious diseases or protocol for exposure to infectious diseases.
  • Assists with foodborne and other disease outbreak investigations with team as appropriate.
  • Maintains current knowledge of infectious diseases and emerging infectious diseases by attending seminars, trainings, virtual vs in-person conferences.
  • Provides education about infectious disease and disease prevention to clients, health professionals, schools, long term care facilities, preschools, high risk populations, other community groups and health department staff using a variety of computer programs, telephone, fax system, emails, presentations, trainings, seminars and outreach events.
  • Provides screenings and treatment, understands and follows standing orders, for infectious diseases.
  • Participates in clinical services such as TB skin testing, STI testing and treatment, vaccine administration, or emergency response events when assigned.
  • Uses electronic data systems, enters data, gather statistics.
  • Participates in assessment, program development, and evaluation of programs to educate and reduce risk of disease for high-risk populations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN); and/or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Nursing Diploma from an accredited school of nursing with licensure by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations
  • All Health Department staff are required to be up to date on the Covid vaccination as determined by the CDC and IDPH, including all primary series doses and boosters, as a term and condition of employment with the Department.
  • Proof of all vaccines are mandatory for employment with the Health Dept., including the flu vaccine.
  • one or more years' experience in direct patient care or public health, preferred.
