The position is for a Public Health Nurse I under the direct supervision of the Nurse Supervisor III, performing general nursing duties for the Texas Department of State Health Service (DSHS) - Public Health Region (PHR) I. Responsibilities include providing public health nursing services to various programs including HIV/STD, Tuberculosis, Immunizations, Preparedness and Response/Epidemiology, and Community Health Improvement program clients.

  • Perform public health nursing duties for the Immunization program, including administering vaccines and observing potential adverse effects.
  • Conduct immunization clinics in Public Health Region 1 (PHR-1) assigned areas.
  • Collaborate with school nurses, county officials, and local coalitions to assess immunization service needs.
  • Maintain clinic records including documentation of vaccine history and administration.
  • Facilitate obtaining signatures of local authorized medical physicians for standing orders.
  • Prepare and complete clinical program reports.
  • Perform comprehensive case management for TB services, including identifying and managing persons with Mycobacterium Tuberculosis.
  • Provide laboratory and diagnostic services and training/education.
  • Perform public health nursing duties for the HIV/STD program, including testing and screening services.
  • Interpret laboratory tests and provide education on HIV/STD prevention.
  • Maintain skills for Public Health Emergency Preparedness and participate in required trainings.
  • Participate in local, regional, and statewide exercises and respond to regional emergency situations.
  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas.
  • Must possess a valid Class C Texas Driver's license or equivalent from another state.
  • Knowledge of community health and nursing care principles.
  • Knowledge of immunization requirements and recommendations in Texas.
  • Knowledge of public health principles/practice, epidemiology, disease prevention, and health promotion.
  • Skills in clinical nursing and team leadership.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements.
  • Ability to work with the public and train others.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Experience in Public Health Nursing and health care management.
  • Experience in working in clinical settings.
  • Experience conducting communicable disease investigations.
  • Experience in planning, organization, and time management.
  • Experience solving problems and exercising sound judgment.
