About The Position

This position supports the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by helping to prevent and control vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) in California, including but limited to measles, pertussis and meningococcal disease. As Chief for the Immunization Branch's VPD Epidemiology and Control Section, the Public Health Medical Officer III (PHMO III) (Epidemiology) initiates, organizes, and directs original epidemiologic investigations of VPDs and interventions to prevent and control VPDs, including immunization coverage levels in the population. The Section Chief also oversees statistical and epidemiologic analyses of immunization registry data to understand gaps in immunization coverage. The position relates epidemiological findings to health policies; provides expert consultation on VPD epidemiology to other State programs and to local health departments; acts as liaison between the department and other medical institutions or agencies cooperating in studies of mutual interest; advises on and participates in training of students, residents and fellows in programs of epidemiology, infectious disease and preventive medicine; prepares research grant applications, articles for publication, and reports; reviews and evaluates research studies and methods in specialized areas of VPD epidemiology and control measures; addresses professional and lay groups. The incumbent works under administrative direction of the Public Health Medical Administrator I (Branch Chief) of the Immunization Branch.
