About The Position

The Public Health Inspector is responsible for conducting routine inspections and investigations related to public health concerns, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves inspecting food service establishments, dwelling units, and various public facilities to identify and address unsanitary conditions and health violations. The inspector will also engage in enforcement actions, prepare documentation for legal proceedings, and respond to emergency situations as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in public health, environmental sanitation, or a related field.
  • One year of experience as a sanitary inspector, code enforcement inspector, or sanitarian.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing health inspections (1 year preferred).
  • Experience in code enforcement (1 year preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine, complaint, and temporary inspections of food service establishments to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Review and analyze monthly bacteriologic testing of frozen dessert products.
  • Investigate violations and enforce provisions of the State Sanitary Code.
  • Inspect and re-inspect dwelling units, preparing findings and issuing correction orders.
  • Prepare documents for condemnation orders and ensure timely removal of occupants from condemned units.
  • Respond to emergency situations after normal business hours, such as fires or significant damage to establishments.
  • Perform lead paint determinations and investigate nuisances affecting public health.
  • Conduct inspections of public swimming pools, spas, recreational camps, and tanning salons for compliance.
  • Inspect body art establishments for Board of Health regulation compliance.
  • Perform inspections to eliminate vermin and rodents, and determine hazardous conditions.
  • Investigate violations of smoking prohibitions and enforce local tobacco regulations.
  • Inspect private sewage disposal systems and review on-site sewage disposal plans for compliance.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and enforcement actions.
