About The Position

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, Department of Public Health Sciences, located at the University of Hawai‘i (UH) in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Telework (from employee's residence city and state within Oahu) may be permissible subject to review and approval by Principal Investigator and RCUH. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in Epidemiology or related field.
  • Six to eight (6-8) years of experience in an academic or research setting in epidemiology, public health, research policy, EHR, healthcare, or other aspects of applied social research.
  • Experience with data collection procedures, data linkages between multiple systems, and analysis in these settings, particularly with substance use data.
  • Strong background in using advanced inferential statistical modeling.
  • Experience in conducting secondary data analyses with complex sampling designs and using statistical and analytic software.
  • Experience working with large-scale, complex epidemiological datasets.
  • Knowledge of institutional review boards (IRBs), human subject protection, and regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with data governance and ethical considerations in substance use and public health research.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral Degree (or ABD) from an accredited college or university in Epidemiology.
  • Additional six (6+) years of direct work experience in an academic or other research setting in substance use and/or epidemiology.
  • Highly proficient in applying appropriate epidemiologic and research methods, descriptive and inferential statistics, secondary data analyses, and/or data science principles.
  • Prior experience working with vital statistics and/or survey data from and across multiple data sources.
  • Knowledge of substance use data and related policy, disease classification, social science or epidemiologic methods.
  • Possesses interest in exploring new concepts and to plan and implement projects using design thinking and planning frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the process of designing, conducting, and analyzing epidemiological studies at the state level focused on substance use, overdose risk, and the impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) and behavioral factors related to health outcomes.
  • Collaborates closely with public health professionals, community organizations, graduate research assistants, and the principal investigator (PI) to generate actionable insights that inform public health practice and policy.
  • Develops and maintains state surveillance systems for overdose reporting.
  • Creates, manages, cleans, maintains, links, and analyzes complex datasets across various public health and other related sources.
  • Leads the onboarding and integration of new data sources and data linkage validation.
  • Attends meetings, including but not limited to, team, community, County, and State level meetings.
  • Communicates with external partners as needed for project purposes.
  • Leads the planning, organizing, and coordination of meetings with pertinent stakeholders in multiple sectors.
  • Responsible for writing reports, assisting with timely completion of extramurally funded deliverables, writing manuscripts, and developing presentations.
