About The Position

The Public Health Environmental Health Specialist III is responsible for preventing human injury and illness by identifying and evaluating environmental sources and hazardous agents. This role involves supervising food service operations, conducting assessments and inspections, and enforcing health codes in various facilities. The specialist will also oversee environmental health activities, manage staff, and engage with the community to promote public health programs.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
  • Four (4) years of experience in the practice of environmental health within a public health agency, including two (2) years as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health or a related science field.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a customer-service field, environmental health, or public health is preferred.
  • Experience in conflict resolution and risk assessment.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises employees assigned to environmental health duties, including conducting performance evaluations and approving leave requests.
  • Maintains schedules of inspections and oversees environmental health activities in an assigned program area.
  • Receives and reviews complaints, assigns specialists to investigate, and evaluates reports of findings.
  • Makes periodic evaluations of environmental programs and reassigns work to balance workload.
  • Oversees the maintenance of reports and records related to environmental health activities.
  • Visits establishments to determine the effectiveness of inspections and uniformity of techniques used by specialists.
  • Investigates establishments with repeated violations and provides final determinations regarding environmental health laws and codes.
  • Instructs specialists in acceptable inspection techniques and departmental policies.
  • Issues letters of warning to non-compliant establishments or facilities.
  • Speaks before community groups and governmental agencies to inform and enlist participation in public health programs.
  • Prepares comprehensive technical reports as required and provides data for departmental budgeting.
  • Coordinates with other agencies to develop emergency response policies and procedures.
  • Provides technical expertise in response to public health emergencies.
