About The Position

The NYC Health Department's Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (BHHS) falls within the Division of Disease Control, overseeing the City's response to viral hepatitis, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Its mission is to improve the lives of New Yorkers by ending transmission, illness, stigma, and inequities related to viral hepatitis, HIV, and STIs. BHHS does this through testing initiatives; prevention, care, and treatment programming; epidemiology and surveillance; training and technical assistance; community engagement; social marketing; policy advocacy; and racial equity and social justice initiatives. BHHS's over 500 staff members work across eight programs: Administration, HIV Care and Treatment, HIV Epidemiology, HIV Prevention, Policy and External Affairs, Racial Equity and Social Justice Initiatives, STI, and Viral Hepatitis. Reporting to a Coordinator (Supervising Public Health Advisor), you will be working within a team of Public Health Advisors, performing community engagement interviewing clients newly- and previously- diagnosed with HIV. You will conduct community visits within the 5 boroughs to clients and facilities, provide partner services and contact tracing, administer HIV, HCV, and STI rapid testing in mobile settings, connect clients with a new HIV diagnosis and clients not in care to clinical care, assess clients for medical and social services needs and make appropriate referrals. You will engage HIV-diagnosed persons and their partners with HIV prevention and ancillary services. Link HIV-negative partners to PrEP providers for evaluation and counseling. You can be assigned to work anywhere within the 5 boroughs. You must be able to work off-hours (evening and weekend) as needed.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twelve semester credits in health education, or in health, social or biological sciences.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and six months of full-time satisfactory experience in a health promotion or disease intervention/prevention program, performing one or more of the following: interviewing, conducting field investigations, assessing health risks, making referrals, or collecting and analyzing epidemiological data.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in the previous point.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above.

Nice To Haves

  • Patient interview, contact tracing/partner notification, medical record review, and community outreach experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Fluency in English and either Spanish or French/Haitian Creole preferred.
  • NYS Driver's License highly desirable.
  • Must be able to work alternative hours (evening and weekends).

Responsibilities

  • Interview HIV-diagnosed persons to elicit HIV-exposed partners, locate and notify partners, administer HIV, HCV and STI rapid testing in mobile settings to notified partners.
  • Connect persons with a new HIV diagnosis with HIV to clinical care.
  • Use HIV transmission network data to identify and reach out to not in care persons, including contact tracing. Connect persons who are not in HIV care with HIV clinical care providers.
  • Engage HIV-diagnosed persons and their partners with HIV prevention and ancillary services. Link HIV-negative partners to PrEP providers for evaluation and counseling.
  • Collect data on HIV cases to fulfill surveillance and case investigation data requirements, including medical record review, patient, and provider interviews.
  • Serve in an activated role and reassigned to Surveillance/Epidemiology, Clinical Operations groups or other work as needed.
