About The Position

The mission of the Bureau of Public Health Clinics is to promote a healthy community by providing New Yorkers with the resources needed to make informed and empowered health decisions; identify and treat tuberculosis and provide immunization and sexual health services regardless of ability to pay or immigration status. The Bureau's vision is to provide timely, accessible, high-quality, equitable and respectful care that helps improve the lives of our patients and contributes to a healthier community. The Public Health Advisor-II will conduct confidential patient interviews at a Sexual Health Center and report directly to the Express Clinic Manager.

Requirements

  • ONLY PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE TITLE AND THOSE THAT ARE REACHABLE ON THE PUBLIC HEALTH ADVISER CIVIL SERVICE LIST ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twelve semester credits in health education, or in health, social or biological sciences; or
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, and six months of full-time satisfactory experience in a health promotion or disease intervention/prevention program, performing one or more of the following: interviewing, conducting field investigations, assessing health risks, making referrals, or collecting and analyzing epidemiological data; or
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above.
  • Undergraduate college credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for one year of full-time experience. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and either twelve semester credits as described in "1" above or six months of experience as described in "2" above.
  • To be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements listed above, at least one year of experience as a Public Health Adviser, Assignment Level I, or at least one additional year of experience as described in Qualification Requirement "2" above.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct confidential interviews in order to identify and bring for evaluation and/or treatment those contacts, suspects or associates at risk for STIs.
  • Provide education and risk reduction messages, emergency contraception and family planning referrals to patients.
  • May perform confidential field investigations per bureau protocol in order to refer patients, contacts, associates and suspects for exams and/or treatments.
  • Review with patient their reason for visit and what services they are there for to ensure patient is in the correct clinic.
  • Enter data and update information of patients into the EMR system.
  • Prepare and send specimen collection kits for individual patient testing.
  • Order tests in EMR.
  • Collect blood specimens for testing and performs HIV Rapid testing. and give patient results.
  • Post patient results and other information into EMR when applicable.
