About The Position

The Public Defender's Office for the 11th Judicial Circuit of Florida is seeking a Mitigation Specialist to support attorneys in juvenile and criminal cases. This role involves conducting biopsychosocial interviews, identifying client issues, and drafting alternative sentencing and treatment plans. The position is client-centered and requires working with individuals in jails and juvenile detention facilities.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in mental health/social service/counseling discipline preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in mental health/counseling discipline plus experience in Social Work/Mental Health/Social Service fieldwork preferred.
  • Experience with Capital case mitigation is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal, computer, and communication skills required.
  • Familiarity with school systems and special needs populations preferred.
  • Bilingual skills: English/Spanish and/or English/Creole preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and comprehensive reports.
  • Clean driving record and valid Florida Driver's License required.
  • Reliable vehicle for travel.

Responsibilities

  • Assist attorneys in juvenile and criminal cases.
  • Conduct biopsychosocial interviews with juveniles and adults.
  • Identify issues related to intellect, mental health, substance abuse, and trauma.
  • Refer clients to experts and obtain necessary records.
  • Draft persuasive alternative sentencing and treatment plans.
  • Identify appropriate educational, substance abuse, and mental health placements.
  • Work with clients in jails and juvenile detention facilities.

  • Salary range of $53,000 - $57,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
