About The Position

The Public Defender II position is responsible for providing legal representation to defendants in criminal cases, conducting legal research, and preparing legal documents for litigation. This role involves representing clients in various legal forums where they face potential loss of liberty, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and agency policies.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
• At least three years of experience practicing law in the defense or prosecution of criminal cases.
• Licensed to practice law by the State of Arkansas.
• Certified to try up to B felonies as per the Arkansas Public Defender Commission requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide legal representation to defendants as required by the courts and the Arkansas Public Defender Commission.
• Investigate cases by locating and interviewing witnesses to gather relevant information for the defense.
• Write briefs, motions, and other pleadings to support case arguments and facilitate the litigation process.
• Prepare, try, and argue routine and some conflict cases before state court forums.
• Draft new or amended legislation or regulations to enforce legislative intent.
• Represent the agency in legal proceedings, including administrative hearings and state and appellate court hearings.
• Analyze and interpret state and federal laws to advise personnel on necessary actions.
• Conduct routine negotiations with clients, witnesses, and other parties to gather information and counsel clients.
• Investigate and review claims to determine the merits of cases or complaints.

Benefits

• Anticipated starting salary of $34,888.
• Salary range from $69,776.00 to $111,293.00.
