About The Position

Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is seeking a part-time or full-time Public Affairs volunteer for their Portland Administration offices. The volunteer is expected to commit a minimum of 10-15 hours a week, with hybrid availability (in-person in the Portland area and virtual). Volunteers will receive extensive training on how to engage with patients and supporters regarding Planned Parenthood's advocacy work in health centers and the community, and the organization's role in advocating for sexual and reproductive healthcare access. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in women and gender studies or those planning careers in non-profit agencies, politics, public affairs, government relations, public health, or community outreach and marketing. All potential applicants will need to pass a background check before being accepted in the program.

Requirements

• Passion for reproductive health and rights for all, including abortion and gender affirming care
• Ability to problem solve
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Self-motivated and able to work independently
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism as a representative of Planned Parenthood’s well-known and widely-trusted brand
• Interest in reproductive health care, education, and women and gender studies issues
• Ability to communicate with public about PPNNE health services, mission and goals
• All potential applicants will need to pass a background check before being accepted in the program

Nice To Haves

• Previous organizing experience a plus, but not required
• Occasional weekend and evening availability
• Means to travel throughout Southern and Mid-Coast Maine a plus, but not required

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation and implementation of volunteer and outreach events, such as tabling at public events, crowd canvassing, action nights, etc
• Learning and entering in data collected
• Phone Banking
• Policy advocacy at state and federal levels
• Work with patients to collect and develop stories for advocacy projects
