About The Position

The Public Affairs Specialist position at the Department of the Interior involves serving as the principal advisor to the District Management Team on public affairs matters. Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the federal service.
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of principles, practices, and techniques of communication.
  • Experience in writing a broad array of written materials, such as news releases and briefing papers.
  • Experience in developing communication strategies and plans to maintain public awareness.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Associated Press and copywriting style.
  • Proficiency in developing and managing internal and external strategic communications projects.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal advisor to the District Management Team and staff on all public affairs matters.
  • Instruct management and staff on their roles and responsibilities regarding the release of information.
  • Act as the principal spokesperson for the District and NCA.
  • Coordinate with the Surprise Field Office on matters regarding the NCA.
  • Communicate BLM policy to those with conflicting points of view.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with media representatives.
  • Serve as the principal media liaison with national syndications.
  • Respond to media/public/Congressional inquiries about BLM responsibilities/activities.
  • Develop and maintain professional, proactive, credible relationships with media outlets.
  • Coordinate media coverage of BLM issues, programs, and activities.
  • Handle media inquiries on sensitive or controversial issues.
  • Create, write, and distribute a wide variety of materials to communicate information about BLM issues, programs, and activities.
