About The Position

Public Health and Prevention Specialist IV reports to the Office of Acquired Brain Injury (OABI) Program Manager and works closely with the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services program to provide advanced senior- level public health work in the development, implementation, and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services program to provide advanced senior-level public health work in the development, implementation, and evaluation of prevention and intervention strategies and initiatives for people who have experienced a brain injury.  Serves as the Texas Brain Injury Advisory Council Liaison and supports the council and initiatives recommended by the council.  Works collaboratively to provide resource facilitation for people with an acquired brain injury to ensure connections to appropriate resources and supports.  Works closely with the Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services program, other internal and external programs related to brain injury and maintains working relationships with stakeholders and organizations that support people with brain injuries.  Works to develop and distribute educational and informational programs and other materials regarding brain injury.  Develops, coordinates, and facilitates statewide trainings to internal and external stakeholders regarding brain injury.  Maintains up-to-date information on state and federal resources for the OABI materials and website.  Acts as a liaison to state and federal partners who provide services or assistance to people with acquired brain injuries.  Assists in the preparation of briefings, reports, presentations, and other communications for the program.  Completes other duties as assigned to further brain injury supports.  Works under limited supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of acquired brain injury or experience working with people with acquired brain injury.
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal laws related to public health in general and brain injury specifically.
  • Knowledge of rehabilitation programs, resources, and benefits.
  • Knowledge of program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of advisory council rules.  Regulations, processes and procedures.
  • Skill with using the internet and computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook as well as webinar platforms.
  • Skill in working collaboratively and cooperatively with colleagues at all levels in the organization as well as external stakeholders.
  • Skill in reviewing and preparing a variety of written documents with attention to detail and to make recommendations.
  • Skill in public speaking or providing complex information in an educational format.

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public health, government, social work, counseling or health and human services related field. Experience working in a health and human services program may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
  • Two years of experience working in a health and human service program.
  • Experience working with individuals with traumatic brain injury, traumatic spinal cord injury or other disabilities.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience in providing consultation and in assisting external program stakeholders, such as advisory boards, councils and/or committees.
  • Experience providing resource facilitation for people with an acquired brain injury or other disability and in providing educational trainings to stakeholders.
  • Experience is preparing briefings, reports, and presentations and other program communications.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as subject matter expert on acquired brain injury and provides advanced consultative and technical assistance to internal and external stakeholders regarding acquired brain injury.
  • Serve as the liaison and supports the work of the Texas Brain Injury Advisory Council, including coordination and facilitation of meetings per the open meetings act, develop, implement and monitor project plans and initiatives recommended by the council, and oversight of annual reports.
  • Provides resource(s) facilitation for people with brain injuries and their family members as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Acts as a liaison to entities providing funding and/or services to people with acquired brain injuries.
  • Conducts ongoing and in- depth research to identify available resources to include in a comprehensive resource database/resource guide.
  • Utilization of person- centered practices, wraparound and trauma informed care to provide resource facilitation to people with brain injuries and family members as well as internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains current knowledge of brain injury on state and federal resources as well as up- to- date knowledge and research about brain injury as it relates to various population groups- veterans, athletes, children, the elderly, operators of motorized and un-motorized vehicles, stroke survivors, etc.
  • Uses this knowledge to develop and implement goals and objectives for the educational component of the program.
  • Serves as the brain injury training coordinator for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develops training plan, curriculum, and continuing education documentation and delivers trainings.
  • Develops educational and informational programs and materials regarding brain injuries.
  • Coordinates and oversees the distribution of these programs and materials.
  • Attends health fairs, conferences, and other events across the state to disseminate brain injury educational materials.
  • Accountable for the development and implementation of effective techniques for the ongoing evaluation of OABI program activities.
  • Oversees the distribution and ongoing evaluation of these programs and materials.
  • Represents the brain injury programs in stakeholder and other professional meetings by relating information about current and planned activities of the office as well as engaging in strategic planning discussions about long term goals.
  • Collects, organizes, analyzes and prepares material in response to requests for program information.
  • Prepares briefings, reports, and presentations and other communications for the program, maintains a comprehensive, informative website for individuals seeking information on brain injury and other communications for the program.
  • Other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
