About The Position

This position works 8:30am-4:30pm Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday General Summary Under supervision of the Spiritual Care Supervisor the chaplain serves the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families and employees. Provides for the pastoral needs of patients, families, and staff. Specifically, the chaplain, through professional training and certification, assists patients, their family members, and staff to understand more fully life's events as they relate to their spiritual and emotional well-being. Within the context of the individual's life experience the chaplain may offer prayer or reflection. The position requires a graduate degree in divinity or related field, ordination from an established religion.

  • Flexibility in work hours, programs, and services. Flexible workdays Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Every other week Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Serve as on call chaplain twice a month.
  • Master's degree in divinity or a related theological field, from an accredited college, university or seminary is required.
  • Ordination or rostering as a Roman Catholic Priest, Jewish Rabbi, Protestant Clergy, or equivalent designation is required.
  • Board Certification (BCC) and active membership with a nationally recognized spiritual care association such as the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or similar (Ordinarily an association ascribing to the Certification for Professional Spiritual Care: Common Qualifications and Competencies) preferred or within 24months of hire .
  • Good standing and Letter of Endorsement or letter of recommendation from applicant's faith group is required.
  • Three years relevant, pastoral experience or equivalent is required.
  • Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) center is required.
  • Knowledge of theology, scripture, counseling skills, comparative religions, canonical law, and church practices. General knowledge of psychology and the health care field.
  • Ability to handle confidential issues with the utmost integrity and discretion.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and basic computer skills are necessary to work with various Hospital departments, employees, patients and families.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides pastoral care to patients, families, and employees of Baltimore Washington Medical System staff in accordance with departmental procedures and accepted pastoral practices.
  • Consults with professional staff members on patient needs and problems including recommending referrals to outside resources for follow-up care in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Provides leadership/training opportunities consistent within the area of specialty or training and experience as assigned by the Spiritual Care Supervisor.
  • Actively participates in regular supervisory sessions with the Pastoral Services Director.
  • Observes established Medical System policies, procedures, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
