The Patient Access Representative - Bed Control position coordinates with nursing management the scheduling and placement of patients into inpatient nursing units, the hospital information admission, discharge and transfer (ADT) systems and all other related responsibilities pertinent to the scheduling office. Responsible for the timely and accurate compilation of patient socio-demographic and financial/insurance data either prior to or at time of service. Facilitates patient access into the health system and serves as an advocate of patients' rights for health care issues and insurance coverage. Assist in the flow of data between physicians, physician office staff, nursing floors, ancillary departments, emergency department, patient business services, insurance companies and patients while ensuring patient confidentiality is not breached. Assists in patients with verification and pre-certification of insurances.

  • Assists with the assignment of patient beds.
  • Accurate registration and/or pre-registration of patients within established departmental guidelines for both socio-demographic and financial/insurance data as back to up daily registration staff.
  • Facilitates patients' intake/transition to the health system by providing excellent customer service skills and serving as an advocate for the patient in identifying third party payer coverages and referral and pre-certification requirements.
  • Collecting co-pay deductibles and cash collection.
  • Educating the patient regarding their rights, advance directives, system services, and other patient services.
  • Providing timely and accurate information regarding patient data/status to other health system departments, physicians, physician office staffs, and other publics while ensuring patient confidentiality is not breached.
  • Ensuring patient flow through the registration process or phone intake process is professional, patient friendly, and within department established time standards.
  • Two years of college or 2 years prior equivalent experience in a health care setting.
  • Computer knowledge and minimum typing requirements of 35 -40 wpm.
  • General knowledge of health insurance and business experience.
  • Knowledge of clinical terms helpful.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with patients, their family and the public.
