About The Position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Clinical Psychology Position: Postdoctoral Fellow Department: Psychiatry Location: University of Vermont Department of Psychiatry/University of Vermont Medical Center Start Date: Summer/Fall 2026 Overview: The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Vermont Medical Center is seeking a dedicated and motivated Postdoctoral Fellow in Clinical Psychology to contribute to our research and clinical programs. This anticipated position will involve a flexible distribution of clinical work and research, providing a unique opportunity to advance both practical and academic skills in a supportive environment. Position is for 2 years to allow accrual of supervised hours needed for licensure. The clinical work will be conducted within the Department of Psychiatry’s new Suicide Care Clinic, a multidisciplinary clinic that provides evidence-based psychological treatments to patients who experience suicidal thoughts and suicidal behaviors. Clinical work will be supervised by Dr. Craig Bryan, an international expert in the assessment and treatment of suicide risk and co-developer of Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (BCBT) and Crisis Response Planning (CRP) for suicide prevention, and other psychologists in the Department of Psychiatry. A key outcome of clinical training is for fellows to learn and administer these suicide-focused interventions with high fidelity and reliability. The research will be conducted within the STRENGTHENS (Studies to Refine and Enhance Next Generation Therapies to Prevent Suicide) Group. STRENGTHENS focuses on developing, testing, and optimizing targeted interventions to prevent suicidal behavior and promote rapid and long-lasting recovery from suicidal despair. Fellows will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research studies and initiate new projects that align with the mission of the Suicide Care Clinic and STRENGTHENS. A key outcome of research training is for fellows to learn how to design and manage research studies with high-risk participants in clinical and medical settings.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of an APA-accredited internship.
  • Strong background in research methodology and statistical analysis.
  • Strong experience in providing psychological assessments and therapy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with cognitive-behavioral and manualized approaches.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based intervention literatures and clinical approaches.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assessment, clinical conceptualization, and treatment of diverse clinical populations in accordance with ethical guidelines and best practices.
  • Conduct individual, family and/or group therapy sessions, utilizing evidence-based approaches.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students or interns if available and as appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical team meetings and case consultations.
  • Provide research expertise to colleagues as part of multidisciplinary collaborations.
  • Conduct independent and collaborative research in developmental psychopathology.
  • Design and implement studies, including obtaining required institutional support, participant recruitment, data collection, and analysis.
  • Prepare and submit research manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research findings at conferences and institutional seminars.
  • Collaborate with faculty and other researchers on ongoing projects and grant proposals.
