About The Position

The Psychiatrist serves as a consultant and/or provides consultation to BSU, facility administration, treatment teams, and external partners and provides education to treatment teams, medical staff, BSU, and other stakeholders to support and reinforce residents' adherence to medication protocols and engagement in their healthcare. Responsibilities of the Psychiatrist will include: providing psychiatric services and supervising mental healthcare providers within the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice organization, providing Mental Health and Psychiatric Care, assuming responsibility for clinical services including diagnostic evaluations, medication management, and individual/group/family therapy, as appropriate, conducting in office/unit visits as appropriate, integrating information from available sources to include documentation and consultation with staff to develop a case conceptualization, working with interdisciplinary treatment team members to develop and implement treatment plans for assigned patients, and identifying most appropriate plan of care and medication to address presenting problems and monitors medication regimen regularly. The Psychiatrist will also use feedback from staff and resident to determine the necessity for adjustment to the treatment plan, work with treatment team members to effectively reduce the use of seclusion and restraint, assist with the Reentry process by ensuring that the resident is educated about his medication and treatment plan and provided sufficient medication to aid in a safe and smooth transition to the community and/or another placement and review labs and relevant consultation reports. Telework eligibility is contingent upon the needs of the facility. The Psychiatrist may be approved to telework up to one day per week. Provides on-call service to consult with staff as needed. As a requirement for employment, the chosen candidate for this position must be able to commit to an initial basic skills training, which is a three-week academy held at the Virginia Public Safety Training Center in Hanover, Virginia. The training program will consist of classroom academic instruction, skill-based classes, practical application, and scenario-based sessions. The basic skills training is typically scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
