The COE Psychiatrist serves as the clinical leader for Court Ordered Evaluation (COE) services, responsible for delivering high-quality psychiatric care while overseeing clinical operations, provider supervision, and program performance within a fast-paced crisis environment. This role blends direct patient care with leadership responsibilities, ensuring standardization, quality, and compliance across the COE program.

Requirements

  • Doctorate of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine
  • At least 4 years of post-doctoral experience, to include approved psychiatric residency training programs, in the delivery of mental health treatment of adults, children and/or adolescents
  • Licensed by the State of Arizona
  • Eligible for Board Certification
  • Unrestricted DEA license
  • At least 2 years’ experience providing behavioral health services to adults over the age of 65, individuals with substance abuse, individuals who are seriously mentally ill, individuals who have co-occurring disorder, and/or individuals who may be victims or perpetrators of domestic violence
  • Demonstrated proficiency: Microsoft Office Software, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Internet Browsers and Searches
  • Fingerprint clearance may be required
  • Ability to demonstrate awareness and respect for cultural, lifestyle, age, gender, and sexual orientation diversities of clients and staff; apply knowledge of age, gender, and multi-cultural counseling skills
  • Fully vaccinated, including showing proper documentation, or otherwise be exempt pursuant to the Company’s exemption process prior to their start date as a condition of employment

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the attending psychiatrist for a half of individuals admitted under COE, providing comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, crisis interventions, risk assessments, and discharge planning across medical, psychological, and social domains
  • Performs Court Ordered Evaluations (COEs) and associated affidavits; provides testimony in court as required
  • Completes Affidavits for CRC as needed
  • Oversees care delivered by psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants, including daily case staffing and direct patient evaluation as needed
  • Leads daily interdisciplinary team rounds (Monday–Friday) to ensure coordinated, high-quality care delivery
  • Guides treatment planning, collaborates with internal and external providers, and ensures alignment with crisis care best practices
  • Coordinates with legal systems, community partners, and outpatient providers to ensure appropriate handling of involuntary patients and continuity of care
  • Serves as escalation point for complex clinical cases and after-hours concerns requiring medical leadership
  • Partners closely with the COE Program Manager to ensure efficient and effective unit operations
  • Drives standardization of clinical workflows, ensuring consistency in care delivery, documentation, and treatment planning
  • Supports quality improvement initiatives, reducing variation and improving clinical outcomes across the COE program
  • Monitors KPIs and operational metrics to ensure program effectiveness and compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Provides structured supervision and mentorship to psychiatric NPs and PAs, including regular 1:1 meetings, chart reviews, and performance feedback
  • Tailors development plans based on experience level and individual performance needs
  • Supports clinical competency development through targeted education and coaching
  • Serves as supervising attending for medical students and residents rotating through the COE unit
  • Directs clinical education experiences and completes required evaluations
  • Contributes to development and delivery of didactic content for clinical staff and provider meetings
  • Participates in inpatient committees, peer reviews, and medical staff meetings
  • Collaborates with medical leadership on strategic initiatives and clinical standards
  • Provides coverage for the UPC Medical Director as needed
