About The Position

The Psychiatric Staff Nurse provides psychiatric nursing care including intake, assessment, and interventions (including crisis interventions) for psychiatric patients. This role involves medication administration and management, initiating interdisciplinary care plans for the inpatient unit, and collaborating with the Emergency Department and Mental Health team for patient disposition. The nurse assists with discharge planning and education while maintaining professional communication with colleagues.

Requirements

  • 1 year of psychiatric nursing experience preferred.
  • 1 year of current clinical nursing experience required.
  • Successful completion of an approved nursing program; if not a BSN, actively working towards completion.
  • Current licensure as a registered nurse by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Providers BLS certification.
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates clinical nursing knowledge and skill in the specialization of the unit.
  • Utilizes the nursing process effectively in the care of culturally diverse patients and families.
  • Organizes and reprioritizes patient care activities based on environmental changes.
  • Assesses patients to collect data and identify learning needs according to established standards.
  • Develops and individualizes a plan of care for each patient.
  • Implements the patient's plan of care in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan(s) of care and makes revisions based on patient responses.
  • Assesses patient/family learning needs and develops teaching plans.
  • Participates in quality improvement, risk management activities, and supports evidence-based guidelines.
  • Participates in unit governance and the education of new staff.
  • Performs charge nurse duties and supervises other nursing staff as needed.
