SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF WORK The Psychiatric Nurse provides professional psychiatric and medical nursing services within a Nebraska-licensed voluntary mental health crisis stabilization and respite program (CSRC). The Psychiatric Nurse ensures compliance with Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regulations, the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act, and facility policies. T he Psychiatric Nurse plans, implements, and evaluates programs of care and therapeutic interventions to meet the assessed needs of individuals served. The Psychiatric Nurse supports stabilization, promotes wellness, coordinates care, and assists individuals and families in successful reintegration into the community. Services are delivered in a trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and person-centered environment. Compensation : Salary is determined by total years of relevant experience. Requirements

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed in the state of Nebraska as an RN.
  • Two years of experience, preferably in a substance abuse or mental health behavioral health setting along with working knowledge of primary health care issues.
  • Valid driver’s license/ acceptable driving record

Responsibilities

  • Nursing Assessment and Clinical Care Provide comprehensive psychiatric nursing assessments, including routine and urgent/emergent assessments as clinically indicated. Conduct physical health screenings and assess ongoing medical needs. Screen for health risks during initial nursing assessment and periodically thereafter. Identify medical or psychiatric conditions requiring referral, consultation, or transfer to a higher level of care. Plan, implement, and evaluate individualized programs of nursing care and therapeutic intervention. Develop, implement, and update nursing care plans consistent with the interdisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Medication Management and Provider Collaboration Provide management and administration of medications in collaboration with the CSRC psychiatric provider and other licensed providers. Administer medications in accordance with the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act, licensed provider orders, and facility policies. Perform medication reconciliation at admission and discharge. Monitor therapeutic response, side effects, and overall medication effectiveness. Ensure secure storage and accurate documentation of medications, including controlled substances. Provide medication education to individuals and families as appropriate.
  • Health Monitoring and Withdrawal Risk Oversight Monitor vital signs and overall physical health status. Observe for behavioral or physiological indicators of substance use complications or mild withdrawal symptoms. The program does not operate as a detoxification facility; individuals requiring medical detox services will be referred or transferred in accordance with policy. Provide crisis health intervention to stabilize health concerns within scope of practice. Implement preventive as well as remedial health and wellness plans. Coordinate referrals for external medical services when indicated.
  • Crisis Intervention and Stabilization Provide crisis health and psychiatric intervention to support stabilization. Utilize approved de-escalation techniques and least restrictive interventions. Participate in ongoing risk assessment and safety planning. Ensure care incorporates best practices in treatment, risk assessment, and multi-agency service coordination.
  • Therapeutic and Family Support Provide a range of therapeutic nursing interventions to individuals and families. Teach education groups focused on medication management and other basic health care. Support individuals and their families during stabilization admission and through reintegration into the community. Offer health coaching and implement individual and group wellness activities. Assist individuals in developing sustainable health and recovery plans.
  • Interdisciplinary and Community Collaboration Work closely with other members of the interdisciplinary team and staff from key community agencies. Coordinate and schedule follow-up appointments for medical care, mental health services, and community-based support programs. Ensure care is appropriate, coordinated, and aligned with community-based services. Cross-train team members in health and wellness interventions as individually indicated. Provide education and training to agency staff regarding physical and behavioral health issues.
  • Documentation and Record Maintenance Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation including nursing assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, medication administration records, and discharge summaries. Ensure documentation reflects clinical decision-making, coordination of care, and discharge planning. Maintain compliance with Nebraska DHHS regulations, HIPAA requirements, and agency policies.
  • Professional Conduct and Organizational Responsibilities Display a courteous, respectful, and caring attitude toward individuals served, families, volunteers, visitors, and staff. Cooperate and collaborate with program area staff and agency personnel. Demonstrate dependability and punctuality in scheduling and attendance. Abide by all specific program and agency procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements. Develop personal and program-related skills through participation in internal and external training opportunities. Participate in quality improvement and performance evaluation activities. Perform other program-related duties as assigned.
