About The Position

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive treatment for patients with psychiatric illnesses across various stages of life, both in outpatient and inpatient settings. This position involves a multifaceted approach to patient care, which includes assessing, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating treatment in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is responsible for evaluating and diagnosing patients who require behavioral health treatment at Nantucket Cottage Hospital (NCH). This includes performing medically delegated aspects of patient care as per the established practice guidelines agreed upon by nursing and medical administrators. In this role, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner develops and initiates individualized treatment plans and goals, utilizing various treatment techniques and revising these plans as necessary based on ongoing assessments. Treatment plans are grounded in comprehensive diagnostic assessments and may involve medication management as part of the therapeutic approach. The practitioner is expected to maintain a high standard of nursing practice, demonstrating knowledge of abuse and neglect identification, reporting requirements, and referral procedures to ensure patient safety and compliance with legal standards. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner also plays a vital role in assisting patients in accessing necessary services from other agencies, thereby facilitating their recovery process. This includes collaborating with referral sources to optimize patient admissions and maintaining effective relationships with primary referral sources. The position requires meticulous record-keeping in accordance with standards set by various regulatory bodies, including JCAHO and the Massachusetts Behavioral Health Partnership, ensuring that patient health records are complete and compliant with policy guidelines. Additionally, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides expert consultation to nursing, physician, and hospital staff to enhance treatment appropriateness and patient safety. The role includes writing orders in line with current guidelines, recommending aftercare plans upon patient discharge, and ensuring continuity of care through follow-up initiatives. The practitioner must maintain proficiency in advanced nursing practice skills, including aggression management, emergency seclusion/restraint, and suicide precautions, while adhering to state and hospital regulations. On-call services are also part of the responsibilities, including coverage during vacations and holidays. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is expected to engage in the development and periodic review of behavioral health policies, monitor patient outcomes, and uphold the standards and educational requirements specific to the position.
