About The Position

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides part-time psychiatric services to students receiving care through the College of Staten Island Counseling Center, including psychiatric assessment, medication evaluation, medication management, and consultation to counseling staff. The role is primarily telehealth (video/phone) with limited on-site presence as directed by the Counseling Center Director, and is structured as an independent-contractor engagement under a one-year contract with two potential one-year renewals.

Requirements

  • Master's in Nursing (Psychiatric NP)
  • Active NYS RN and NP licenses
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification (Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health)
  • Active DEA registration
  • Minimum of three (3) years of verifiable experience as a Nurse Practitioner in a psychiatric clinical setting providing direct patient care (including medication evaluations, medication management, and consultation).
  • Demonstrated expertise in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, and psychopharmacologic management for young adult and college populations.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain clinical information to students and to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary counseling staff; communication quality is a scored evaluation criterion.
  • Ability to work independently as an off-site provider while integrating into the Counseling Center’s workflows and culture.
  • Competence in telehealth service delivery, including comfort with video/phone platforms and remote documentation.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, cultural competence, and adherence to all applicable laws, CUNY policies, and contract terms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations for students referred by the Counseling Center, focusing on diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychopharmacologic interventions within the NP scope of practice.
  • Conduct medication evaluations, initiate and adjust psychotropic medications, and provide ongoing medication management and monitoring, including assessment of efficacy, side effects, adherence, and safety.
  • Offer clinical consultation to Counseling Center staff regarding diagnostic impressions, medication considerations, risk assessment, and integrated treatment planning for shared student cases.
  • Deliver services primarily via telehealth (video/telephone), ensuring clinical quality, confidentiality, and appropriate documentation standards for remote care in a university setting; attend on-campus sessions as requested by the Director.
  • Collaborate with the Counseling Center Director and staff to coordinate care, optimize access, and adjust scheduling based on student demand and acuity.
  • Maintain accurate, timely clinical records in accordance with College, CUNY, and applicable legal and professional standards, and cooperate with any requests for documentation to validate clinical experience.
  • Adhere to all contractual terms regarding confidentiality, data security, intellectual property, and reporting, including proper handling and return/destruction of confidential information at the end of the engagement.
  • Maintain required insurance coverage and licensure throughout the term of the contract and promptly notify the University of any changes impacting eligibility to practice or perform under the agreement.
  • Perform focused psychiatric assessments and mental status examinations appropriate for a college student population, using telehealth or in-person encounters.
  • Evaluate and document risk related to self-harm, harm to others, and grave disability; collaborate with Counseling Center staff and campus resources as appropriate for crisis response and safety planning.
  • Exercise independent clinical judgment in prescribing and managing psychotropic medications under NYS NP scope and DEA regulations, while coordinating with primary care or external providers when indicated.
  • Provide clinical guidance to Counseling Center staff on psychopharmacology, medication interactions, and monitoring needs, ensuring alignment with evidence-based practices and institutional policies.

Benefits

  • Competitive Compensation: $81.89/hour (specialized telehealth rate)
  • Work Schedule: Anticipated utilization: 2–3 days per month. Core hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–5:00 pm Eastern Time, with additional off-hours telehealth consultations as needed. Actual schedule: To be developed collaboratively with the Counseling Center Director based on student needs; hours are estimates only and may vary.
  • Benefits: Position is an independent-contractor engagement; no CUNY employee benefits (health insurance, paid leave, pension) are provided. Contractor is responsible for their own taxes, benefits, and professional expenses (except as otherwise specified in the contract).
