The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed registered professional nurse with graduate preparation (Master's or Doctorate) from an accredited NP program. This role is responsible for conducting psychiatric patient appointments and performing routine psychiatric examinations to ensure patient mental health, including speaking with patients about healthy lifestyle choices, completing diagnostic tests to help diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders, coordinating with other healthcare professionals to maintain updated medical records, and treat the whole person. This role will provide general and preventative psychiatric care, conduct mental health check-ups, treat mental health illnesses, order lab tests, prescribe medication for children and adults, and remain available in-between patients and during admin time for occasional Integrated Behavioral Health questions and consults.

  • Providing health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention, independent psychiatric nursing diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic psychiatric disorders.
  • Developing and managing the psychiatric plan of care for patients or clients, based on the authorization for collaborative practice.
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patients’ age-specific psychiatric needs.
  • Prescribing appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic psychiatric treatment modalities.
  • Providing mental health care for individuals by managing psychiatric problems encountered by patients and clients.
  • Providing innovation in evidence-based psychiatric nursing practice based upon advanced clinical expertise, decision making, and leadership skills.
  • Serving as a consultant, researcher, and patient advocate for individuals, families, groups, and communities to achieve quality, cost-effective psychiatric patient outcomes and solutions.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Facilitating staff, patient, and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • All job responsibilities will be carried out under the direction of the organization’s policies and procedures.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP).
  • APRN license required for Kansas and/or Missouri depending on place of practice.
  • Registered Nurse in State of Kansas.
  • Certification as appropriate to psychiatric advanced or specialized practice by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or an equivalent body, or must be actively seeking certification. Certification must be successfully completed within one year of hire.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical psychiatric experience.
  • Develop rapport with patients and their families, community, and other health care personnel.
  • Exhibit a professional and respectful demeanor.
  • Work successfully independently and within a team, shifting tasks, prioritizing tasks, problem-solving daily, and completing work within deadlines.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service, helpfulness, and a positive attitude.
  • Possess superior organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize, understand, and appreciate the value of cultural diversity and communicate medical information in plain language.
  • Demonstrate social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patients and staff.
  • Exhibit experience and working knowledge of local community resources.
  • Hold current driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Travel to all parts of the facility and throughout the community.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • 1-2 years of experience in the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner role preferred.
