About The Position

The Pennsylvania State University, Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), University Park, PA, has a Psychiatric Nurse position starting August 10, 2026. The Psychiatric Nurse assists psychiatric providers located at University Park CAPS. This position provides direct patient care in close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team of CAPS. Support to the psychiatric providers and students includes communication with pharmacies and insurance companies, coordination of lab orders and results, administrative outreach to students, and records management and assistance. Common offices that the psychiatric nurse coordinates with are (among others) Student Disability Resources, University Health Services, and Community Providers. Participation in weekly staff meetings, consultation, and professional development is included in the typical expectations for this role. All staff perform their duties while adhering to and promoting trauma-informed care and healing-centered approaches and principles, in alignment with the establishment of the Commonwealth of PA as a trauma-informed, healing-centered state.

Requirements

  • If filled as Licensed Practical Nurse - Advanced Professional, this position requires:
  • General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or High School (HS)
  • 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Required Certifications:
  • Licensed Practical Nurse - Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing
  • Diploma in Practical Nursing (PN) - Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing accredited organization
  • If filled as Licensed Practical Nurse - Intermediate Professional, this position requires:
  • General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or High School (HS)
  • 2+ years of relevant experience
  • Required Certifications:
  • Diploma in Practical Nursing (PN) - Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing accredited organization
  • Licensed Practical Nurse - Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing

Nice To Haves

  • Candidates should have the ability to provide services to a wide range of students and work with a wide range of staff.
  • Experience working in the mental health care field is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Obtaining a medical assessment at the intake appointment (obtaining vital signs and medical history from students)
  • Meeting with students for monitoring purposes between their regularly scheduled psychiatric appointments
  • Triaging of patient phone calls and messages
  • Providing psychoeducation to students
  • Communicating with pharmacies and insurance companies
  • Coordinating lab orders and results
  • Providing outreach to students for scheduling or administrative purposes
  • Assisting with student-requested forms and documentation
  • Coordinating documentation with university and community stakeholders
