About The Position

Applicant must possess a graduate degree from an accredited School of Nursing, holding either a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), and must have completed an accredited psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program (PMHNP). Two years of experience in an ambulatory care psychiatric practice setting preferred. The candidate must also possess and maintain a current and unrestricted California Registered Nurse License, California Nurse Practitioner License, California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number, DEA Controlled Substance Registration Certificate, and hold a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner National Board Certification. A minimum of two years of experience in an ambulatory care patient setting is preferred. Must have current CPR certification that complies with the guidelines set by the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation. Applicant must possess a valid California Driver’s License, as the position may involve driving between clinic sites. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMNNP) will provide outpatient psychiatric evaluation and medication management services to adult and pediatric patients in-person and/or using the telehealth platform. The PMHNP will work with other Behavioral Health Services (BHS) department staff to provide psychiatric patient care and coordination services and will collaborate with a psychiatrist. A PMHNP is a licensed practitioner who is responsible for managing psychiatric health problems and coordinating health care for patients in accordance with Federal rules, the California Nurse Practice Act, and regulations set by the California Board of Registered Nursing. This position is an integral part of the BHS care team, which includes psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, chemical dependency counselors, nurses, medical assistants, and other health care staff. Must be able to work with the Indian Community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing attaining a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and/or Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) degree
  • Graduate of an accredited psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program (PMHNP)
  • Must possess and maintain a current and unrestricted: California Registered Nurse license, California Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner license, California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number, Drug Enforcement Administration Controlled Substance Registration Certificate, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner National Board Certification
  • Current CPR (BLS Provider) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or the American Red Cross. Certification may be obtained prior to orientation.
  • California Driver’s License with a safe driving record, DMV record required.
  • Must be insurable by the program’s insurance carrier.
  • Ability to: Build rapport and establish a strong therapeutic working relationships with patients and staff.
  • Manage care activities and reprioritize workload as needed.
  • Work as part of a patient care team.
  • Must be able to work with the Indian Community and be sensitive to the Indian culture and its needs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs age-appropriate psychiatric history-taking and mental status examinations to formulate diagnostic assessments and treatment care plans for children and adults for routine and urgent/emergent psychiatric care needs.
  • Will see patients in a clinic setting or through video/telehealth platform.
  • Documents all aspects of care in the medical record in a timely manner per policy requirements.
  • Orders cognitive/psychological, laboratory and radiology studies when necessary to confirm diagnosis.
  • Consults with the collaborating psychiatrist and/or other health care staff (e.g., medical, dental, nutrition) when necessary to address the needs of the patient
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies to treat the patient’s condition.
  • Prescribes medication assisted treatment (MAT)/medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).
  • Provides individual and/or family therapy as may be required to facilitate treatment plans.
  • Orders appropriate follow-up for patient to assess results of treatment.
  • Refers patient to community resources/providers when necessary for treatments not available from RSBCIHI.
  • Appreciates how historical trauma, intergenerational trauma, racism, racial bias, and discrimination may impact indigenous peoples and place them at higher risk for mental health problems including substance abuse, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, high levels of stress, anger, and suicidality.
  • Be open to incorporating cultural practices or beliefs in treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with guardians, relatives, and significant others on client’s conditions and treatment when clinically appropriate.
  • Provides on-site crisis assessment and management of patients during regular work hours, both on-site and telephonically.
  • Collaborates with crisis specialist regarding initiation and facilitation of admission to treatment facilities.
  • Adheres to RSBCIHI documentation requirements to ensure appropriate reimbursement for services rendered.
  • Follow all procedures and protocols as per RSBCIHI policy, federal and state regulations, standard practice, and in accordance with the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
  • Has an awareness and appreciation for the diversity of Native American cultural and spiritual values and recognizes how these values affect our interactions with Native Americans in the medical setting.
  • Functions as an effective member of the behavioral health care team, which includes psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, chemical dependency counselors, and health educators.
  • Collaborates with other RSBCIHI department staff to facilitate the care of the patient.
  • Provide both efficient and high-quality care to our patients.
  • Participates in Behavior Health Services department staff meetings and clinic site meetings.
  • Implements corrective actions as identified during peer review activities.
  • Delivers patient care within RSBCIHI guidelines as delineated by the BHS and Medical Procedural manuals, position credentialing, and privileging documents.
