The Psychiatric Consultant at Carleton College is a part-time, paid-hourly, non-benefit earning consultant position that provides psychiatric care to college students aged 17-24. This role operates within an integrated, multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment that includes Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists/Counselors, and a consulting Dietitian. The consultant will be responsible for conducting psychiatric assessments and diagnostic evaluations, as well as medication evaluations and follow-ups. The position emphasizes the importance of general mental health education for students referred by medical or counseling staff in the Student Health and Counseling (SHAC) department. In addition to providing direct psychiatric care, the consultant will order lab work as needed and review patients' records to assess the progress and effectiveness of treatment services. The role also involves making referrals for cases that exceed the SHAC's scope of practice and assisting in emergency management and crisis response services, including hospitalization, in collaboration with other SHAC staff. The consultant is expected to identify best practices for medical care according to established professional standards and provide intermittent, brief phone or text consultations regarding medication issues when not on-site. Maintaining accurate and timely clinical treatment records in the electronic health record is a critical responsibility. The consultant will also be tasked with providing care and programs that are sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population, fostering an inclusive healthcare environment. Collaboration with other campus departments to meet the health needs of students is essential, as is consulting with and referring students to other SHAC staff and off-campus providers as appropriate.
