About The Position

The Psych Social Health Tech in the Inpatient Behavioral Health department at Queens Hospital Center is responsible for observing and reporting on patients' physical conditions, mental states, and social behaviors. This role involves providing individual nursing care for patients who are acutely ill, either physically or emotionally. The position requires participation in planning and implementing orientation programs for new patients, gathering information for intake and social histories, and contributing to the development of a therapeutic ward environment. Additionally, the Psych Social Health Tech assists in planning and implementing therapeutic activities for groups of hospitalized psychiatric patients, encouraging client involvement in various individual and group activities as part of planned treatment programs. The role may also include performing functions of a basic Nurse's Aide in support of the aforementioned tasks and reporting observations related to patients' behaviors and conditions.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months of satisfactory experience assisting patients with daily living and therapeutic activities in a hospital or health care setting.
  • Holds or obtains a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) within sixty (60) calendar days of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Observes patient's physical condition, mental state, and social behavior and reports to team leader or Nurse-in-charge.
  • Provides individual nursing care for patients who are acutely ill, either physically or emotionally.
  • Participates in planning and implementing an orientation program for new patients.
  • Gathers information for intake, social histories, referrals, and related purposes.
  • Participates in planning and implementing daily living activities on the ward for patients.
  • Contributes to the development of a therapeutic ward environment.
  • Assists in planning and implementing therapeutic activities with groups of hospitalized psychiatric patients.
  • Encourages client involvement in various individual and group activities as part of planned treatment programs.
  • May perform functions and activities of the basic Nurse's Aide in support of the above tasks and other related work as assigned.
  • Reports observations pertaining to patient's behavior, physical condition, and activities.
