About The Position

We are seeking a Prototyping Engineer to join our Area 404 hardware prototyping team. This role will be responsible for working with engineers to debug mechanical designs, assisting with test fixture development, programming, manufacturing, and assembly work. Our products utilize a variety of materials (from plastics to hard metals) and processes towards a broad swath of applications, and the Prototyping Engineer will either be familiar and experienced with these technologies or be capacity to quickly get up to speed on new technologies. The Prototyping Engineer will work closely with the rapid prototyping team to become more familiar with our machinery and with the mechanical engineering team to help solve design and manufacturing issues. They will also interface and coordinate solutions across the various product teams we service: Compute, Storage, Network, Mechanical, Thermal, Power, other Data Center/Infrastructure teams, Facebook Connectivity and Facebook Reality Labs. We move fast and are looking for a person who has demonstrated experience as an advanced individual contributor role finding the fastest, most efficient ways to go from concept to finished parts.

Requirements

• Experience running 3-axis milling equipment
• Experience in Computer-Aided Design software and fixture design (SolidWorks, Creo)
• Experience with other manufacturing processes including injection molding, 3D printing, stamping, welding
• Skills in Computer-Aided Manufacturing software and CNC programming
• Experience in rapid prototyping environment
• Experience communicating timelines and expectations to other groups within Facebook
• Experience working with cross-functional partners such as mechanical and thermal engineers

Nice To Haves

• 2+ years of experience in a prototyping environment with advanced CNC machine tools
• 2 years Associates Degree in machining, engineering, or fabrication or Engineering degree
• Demonstrated experience in a prototyping environment serving Data Center, and/or Consumer Goods
• Experience with CNC controllers (Heidenhain, Haas)
• Knowledge of thermodynamics, electronics and cooling systems
• Experience with 4- and 5-axis milling equipment

Responsibilities

• Programming and operation of all 3-5 axis CNC and manual machining equipment
• CNC Machining of basic to moderately complex parts in metal (90% Aluminum) and plastic
• Operation of fabrication equipment such as water jet
• Demonstrate quality craftsmanship, with a desire to produce the best quality components possible
• Interface with product engineers on part functionality, advise on the part suitability for manufacturing, and prototyping solution development
• Design for Manufacturing (CNC, Additive, Injection Mold, Assembly, Serviceability, Total Cost of Ownership)
• Ensure that the machines are properly maintained, that stock material supplies are adequate and that the shop is operated in a safe and workmanlike manner
• CAD support when needed
• Part quality and inspection
