About The Position

Position Summary: The Prototype Machinist sets up and operates Southwestern’s TRAK mill and lathes using Southwestern’s offline software and sets up and runs 3- and 5-axis VMC or similar. This role works in a prototype machine shop environment and understands how to set up small or one-off custom part runs in an efficient manner. The position applies GD&T, reads shop prints, interacts and communicates with engineers and scientists, and operates machinery and equipment in a safe manner. Requirements

  • Must have a training school background plus 3 to 5 years in a prototype machine shop using manual machines, or 5 to 10 years in a prototype machine shop.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Requires working knowledge of controls and instrumentation, conceptual skills, functional and technical skills, attention to detail, good verbal communication skills, and ability to use good judgment.
  • Must have a strong understanding of GD&T and be able to read shop prints.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate with engineers and scientists.
  • Frequent use of computers with repetitive keyboard and mouse activity and manual dexterity
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools for long periods
  • Ability to regularly lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Operate machinery and equipment in a safe manner
  • Perform housekeeping tasks as necessary to maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Notify supervisory personnel if a nonconforming condition is disclosed
  • Perform tool proofing of first run jobs and give feedback to programming to ensure run efficiency and accuracy
  • Set controls of feed, speed, and depth of cut without supervision
  • Understand and apply optimal workholding techniques
  • Work with other operators as required to ensure optimum setup
  • Analyze and solve manufacturing problems with a high level of skill
  • Follow safety guidelines and procedures established by the company
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and/or calipers
  • Identify nonconforming parts using precision measuring instruments
  • Set tooling and apply offsets
  • Using tooling and material data, calculate surface footage to machine components
