About The Position

To support this mission, Syngenta's Trait Characterization & Product Safety Team is seeking a Protein Biochemist in Durham. As a Protein Biochemist, you will independently design, execute, and/or monitor experimental studies/risk assessments within Product Safety to support the development and maintenance of GM/GE products for Syngenta.

Requirements

  • PLEASE NOTE: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis without requiring current or future sponsorship (which also includes OPT/CPT and H-1B visas).
  • PhD, or Masters with 3+ years relevant professional experience in protein biochemistry or a related field.
  • Expertise in protein biochemistry applied to deliver high-quality data packages for successful global registration of genetically modified crops, including computational modeling techniques, 3D structure analysis and prediction using visualization software.
  • Demonstrated proficiency of basic laboratory techniques, including but not limited to ELISA, total protein quantitation, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, glycosylation analysis.
  • A proven track record of solving difficult and complex technical problems.
  • Dedication to maintaining and continuously improving the highest working standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Minor in statistics or biostatistics or equivalent experience in statistical analysis is a plus.
  • Experience in insect bioassays
  • Experience as a study director or study monitor of studies in accord with GLP standards.
  • Strong technical writing capabilities, including the preparation of GLP-standard protocols, reports, and SOPs with clarity and comprehensibility.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plan, design, execute, monitor, and deliver protein characterization studies (including quantification of transgenic proteins in plant samples) in compliance with regulatory and GLP requirements, where applicable, or otherwise fit for purpose.
  • Document experiments and results in accordance with GLP guidelines, interpret data, write and review technical documents (protocols, reports, SOPs) with scientific rigor.
  • Develop and validate protein analytic methods (e.g., enzymatic activity assays) for application in protein characterization studies.
  • Characterize microbial and plant proteins from different and complex matrices using standard biochemical methods like ELISA, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, glycosylation analysis, activity assessments.
  • Play an active role in identifying, solving, and managing a variety of technical issues or challenges.
  • Provide technical expertise and collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Contribute to agency responses by providing technical input to address questions from regulatory authorities.
  • May lead a workgroup and train other staff on technical skills.
  • Supervise and maintain procedures and equipment.
  • Work to increase efficiencies by optimizing processes.
